Solutions and Risk Assessment

Posted on June 21, 2009

Our proposed solution is to implement a Digital Literacy curriculum developed by FSU and taught by FSU students.  The details of this solution and the specific problems it addresses are available in our project plan.  In short, it addresses economic, usability, and empowerment components of the Digital Divide.  This plan includes very little risk to Tallahassee Housing Authority, because it is being developed and taught for free.  It may affect other programs offered through THA or others, including for-profit programs, by introducing a new after school activity for THA youth.

Alternative solutions include doing nothing and using an existing curriculum.  Very few existing digital literacy curriculums exist, especially for youth.  Those that do exist are usually expensive and/or designed to advertise a particular suite of products, such as Microsoft Office.  There is a clear need for a new, comprehensive curriculum that is adaptable to all ages.

Doing nothing would leave the residents of THA on the wrong side of the Digital Divide.  The consequences of this affect all areas of their lives, putting them at a disadvantage in school and in the workplace.

As always, visit our working plan for more details on our progress, and check the blog for regular updates.
